Product Description
“Black people are not dark-skinned white people,” says advertising visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are much more. They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly making a way out of “No way!” At this pivotal point in history, the idea of black inferiority should have had a “Going-Out-of-Business Sale.” After all, Barack Obama has reached America’s Promised Land. Yet, as Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority testifies, too many in black America are still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of “the greatest propaganda campaign of all time”—the masterful marketing of black inferiority, aka the BI Complex—Burrell poses ten disturbing questions that will make black people look in the mirror and ask why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still think and act like slaves. Burrell’s acute awareness of the power of words and images to shift, shape, and change the collective consciousness has led him to connect the contemporary and historical dots that have brought us to this crossroads. Brainwashed is not a reprimand—it is a call to action. It demands that we question our self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Racism is not the issue; how we respond to media distortions and programmed self-hatred is the issue. It’s time to reverse the BI campaign with a globally based initiative that harnesses the power of new media and the wisdom of intergenerational coalitions. Provocative and powerful, Brainwashed dares to expose the wounds so that we, at last, can heal.

Needs Repeating July 23, 2010 Don Barbera (Dallas, TX USA) At the request of a friend I just completed Tom Burrell's "Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority" and found the premise and politics on target. Although his argument appears in many tomes before, it is no less relevant. It is his unique view as a "marketing" professional that gives this read heft. In marketing-speak, he is on the money regarding the ceaseless campaign of white-superiority and black inferiority, including how we have picked up the torch and unconsciously promote the campaign. The signs are there everyday for all to see ranging from our blinged-out rappers and video-vixens to our over-the-top spending habits and lack of concern for the future. Overall, this book is a good read and worthy of widespread thought.
High school caliber writing and reasoning July 20, 2010 A reader (Virginia, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Broad generalizations, stilted, cliche-ridden language, near-total lack of academic research: this book reads a lot like the term papers I wrote on a deadline in the tenth grade. It would be laughable if it weren't such a serious subject. And at the end of every chapter, the author offers solutions such as "like ourselves more" and "create media that pays attention to black-on-black violence." I bought this on a whim when it popped up on my amazon recommendations; I am sorry I did.
Jarring, Enlightening, and Well Written July 17, 2010 Heretic 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bravo Mr. Burrell. I own over 700 books but could not put this one down. I finished in 2 days because it is such a well-written, balanced, honest look at what you call "BI" complex. You speak from a place of experience, having been a master advertiser and marketer. Reading your book made me sad but more aware because I, like one of the other reviewers, can no longer sit by and laugh at violence or be entertained by filth and degrading acts. A book-like this one-is brilliant when it makes the reader see the faults in his own behavior and fathers a desire in the reader not only to change but to want to help others become more aware and improve their lives.
Better to be enslaved than brainwashed! July 9, 2010 Lawrence Christopher (Atlanta, GA) "It's better to be enslaved than to be brainwashed." MoFo
God bestowed upon us free will; so man should not deny us of free-thinking. In Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority author Tom Burrell does a masterful job exposing "the greatest propaganda of all time;" that Black African-Americans are inferior.
Continued brainwashing is that Black African-Americans are descendants of slaves. We are descendants of Africans and our lineage continues "one-drop" of blood at a time.
Excellent! July 7, 2010 R. Williams A great book tracing the beginnings of the myth of the black inferiority complex and detailing how it has affected blacks psychologically and our society as a whole. The book speaks a lot about racist propaganda that has negatively portrayed blacks for hundreds of years and still lingers today. The book speaks about some of the self-hatred that blacks have for their own race as a result of the myth of the white superiority complex. This book is a must read, especially for African Americans who wish to learn more about their history and its impact today.
